My Brain: A Time Traveler Learning to Live in the Now

Do you spend more time thinking about the future or the past? Why?

Do I spend more time thinking about the future or the past? Oh, honey, my brain’s a time traveler with a serious case of jet lag. It’s constantly zipping between “what if?” and “what was,” rarely bothering to check in with “what is.” It’s exhausting, frankly.

The past is like that comfy old armchair I sink into with a cup of herbal tea (decaf after 4 PM, darling, gotta protect those beauty sleep hours). Familiar, cozy, and full of questionable decisions that seemed brilliant after a glass of wine or two. I revisit cringe-worthy moments with the morbid fascination of watching a rom-com gone wrong. Did I really wear that on our first date? Was that text message a tad too enthusiastic? The answer is always a resounding “yes” followed by a dramatic sigh and a fervent prayer that no one unearthed those old photos. But hey, at least it provides fodder for hilarious girl’s night out stories (when I strategically edit out the truly mortifying bits, of course).

The future, on the other hand, is a dazzling, all-you-can-eat buffet of possibilities. I’m like a kid in a shoe store with unlimited credit, imagining myself conquering the world in killer heels and a power suit. I’ll be a bestselling author, a CEO, and a globetrotting philanthropist with a ridiculously cute rescue puppy. Sure, reality might eventually swap my designer wardrobe for yoga pants and a messy bun, but a girl can dream, right?

But here’s the thing I’ve learned amidst all this temporal tourism:  the present is where the real magic happens. It’s like stumbling upon that perfect shade of lipstick that makes you feel like a million bucks. You could walk right past it if you’re too busy staring at your reflection in the mirror of “what was” or your vision board for “what if.”

For too long, I was so busy dwelling on past fashion faux pas and fantasizing about future fabulousness that I forgot to savor the “now.” The taste of my morning latte, the feeling of sand between my toes, the heartfelt conversations with my best friends – these are the moments that truly matter. They’re the sparkling diamonds that adorn the necklace of our lives.

So, I’m making a conscious effort to be more present. To truly listen when someone is speaking, to appreciate the beauty around me, and to maybe, just maybe, resist the urge to overanalyze every text message like it’s a cryptic message from the universe. It’s a work in progress, but I’m learning to appreciate the journey, not just the destination. After all, who knows what amazing adventures await me in this very moment? Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to enjoy a mani-pedi… without overthinking it (okay, maybe just a little).
