How would you describe yourself to someone?
Describing yourself to a stranger is a strange exercise. Say too little and you sound dull. Say too much and you sound like a dating profile. But if I had to pick four words and stand behind them, they would be intelligent, adventurous, loyal, and, above all, a free spirit. Here is what I mean by each, with the ornamental bits removed.
Intelligent
I will say this plainly, because false modesty takes longer. I like to learn. I read about things I do not need to know, I enjoy a conversation that makes me change my mind, and I will listen to a point of view I disagree with for longer than is strictly comfortable. The intelligence I value most is not the kind that wins arguments. It is the kind that understands why the other person is making theirs. That is where empathy comes from, and empathy is how you actually connect with people.
Adventurous
I do not like comfort zones. I like them as a place to sleep, and that is all. New places, new cultures, new experiences: backpacking somewhere remote, eating something I cannot pronounce, taking on a challenge that looks a size too big. Adventure keeps me curious and keeps my mind open, and it produces the kind of memory you still tell people about years later, usually with the bad parts edited out.
Loyal
If I am in your corner, I am in your corner. Family and friends get the full version: trust, patience, a confidant who listens without keeping score, and a person who will still be standing there after the difficult part. I am also loyal to my values and the things I believe in, which means I do not fold under pressure. It is not stubbornness. It just looks like it from the outside.
Free spirit
This is the one underneath all the others. I do not do things a certain way because that is how they are done. If a rule only exists to keep people small, I will step around it, politely, and keep going. The free spirit is what lets me handle change without panic, accept that I am not perfect, and make my own path even when a perfectly good one has been laid out for me. It is also where the creative side lives: writing, painting, dancing, whichever one fits the mood that day.
The short version
Intelligent, adventurous, loyal, free. Put them together and you get the person writing this, more or less. I think knowing your own four words is worth the effort. It makes you easier to live with, mostly for yourself.
So, to anyone who wonders who I am: someone still learning, still moving, still loyal, and still not interested in staying inside the lines. You should work out your own four words. It is cheaper than a personality test, and nobody sells your answers.
