If you had to be an animal for a week, which one would you be and why?

Let me start by saying I gave this question far more thought than it deserved. I considered eagles (too much wind exposure), dolphins (too much small talk with tourists), and octopuses (nine brains sounds like eight too many meetings). In the end, I landed on the house cat, and honestly, once I explain my reasoning, you will wonder why you even brought up the other animals.

The Case for Cat

A house cat works fifteen minutes a day, tops. Those fifteen minutes are split between knocking something off a table to confirm gravity still works and staring at a human with an expression that says “I have seen things you would not believe, and also feed me.” That is a job description I could thrive in.

Consider the schedule of a cat. Wake up. Stretch dramatically, as though auditioning for a perfume ad. Locate the one sunbeam in the house and defend it like sovereign territory. Nap. Reassess life. Nap again, this time somewhere deeply inconvenient, like directly on top of the remote control or inside a shoebox two sizes too small. There is no calendar invite for any of this. There is no “quick sync” to discuss the sunbeam strategy going forward.

The Perks, Itemized

  • Zero email. A cat has never once been cc’d on anything, and it shows in their stress levels.
  • Built-in main character energy. Everyone in the household reorganizes their entire day around a cat’s whims, and the cat has never once said thank you. I would like to try that lifestyle, just for a week, purely as research.
  • Napping is not just accepted, it is the whole point. Somewhere between sixteen and twenty hours a day. I have colleagues who would call that “a red flag.” A cat calls it “Tuesday.”
  • Total immunity from small talk. Try to have a shallow conversation with a cat. You cannot. It will simply walk away mid sentence, and everyone will agree the cat was right to do so.

The One Risk I Am Willing to Accept

Yes, I understand there is a chance I get adopted by someone who insists on dressing their cat in tiny sweaters for photos. I have made peace with this. A week is a week. I will wear the sweater. I will also judge everyone in the room while wearing it, because that is simply what the sweater requires of me.

In Conclusion

Somewhere out there, a dog person is reading this shaking their head, already composing a rebuttal about loyalty and long walks and unconditional love. I hear you. I respect the passion. I am still choosing the cat. A week of doing exactly what I want, sleeping whenever I please, and being fed on demand by people who love me despite receiving nothing in return sounds less like an animal fantasy and more like a wellness retreat I would actually attend.

So if you see a cat this week looking unusually pleased with itself, no comment.
