Fear. We all know it—the racing heart, the “what ifs,” the urge to play it safe or say “maybe later.” For much of my life, fear quietly shaped my decisions from the shadows. It rarely announced itself openly. Yet, its influence was nearly always there. It nudged me to avoid taking risks. It urged me to stay small. It made me wait for perfect certainty before acting.
When I was invited to contribute a chapter to Do It Afraid, I knew I had to be transparent. I needed to share not just my victories but also my struggles with fear. This book goes beyond familiar platitudes about “being fearless.” Instead, it’s about a different kind of courage: taking action even when you still feel afraid. You discover your own power in that very moment.
Why Write About Fear Paralysis?
Because fear paralysis is real. It’s not simply being nervous—it’s that heavy, invisible force that keeps us from moving forward. You postpone sending the email. You second-guess volunteering for the project. You stay silent, even when your perspective could change everything. Over time, these small moments stack up, quietly stalling your growth and your dreams.
I’ve felt that paralysis. I’ve seen how it erodes confidence and limits what’s possible—not only for myself, but for people I coach and lead. Breaking free from this cycle was transformative, and it’s why I’m passionate about helping others do the same.
Lessons Learned from Doing It Afraid
The biggest revelation on my journey? Waiting for fear to disappear before taking action is a losing game. Confidence grows as a result of courageous action, not the other way around. We build true momentum by taking small, brave steps. These steps are often taken with shaking hands and a pounding heart. This leads to execution effectiveness.
Do It Afraid is filled with raw stories, including mine. It offers hard-won insights and actionable strategies. These help you face what’s holding you back. The goal isn’t to eradicate fear—it’s to stop letting it drive your outcomes.
